April 26th 2013...

Running… all that she could feel was the sensation of running. How it felt like pure freedom as she was running as fast as she could. The smell of the earth filling her senses, the feel of the ground beneath her paws, and the sensation of the wind blowing across her fur as she was weaving through the trees. Though, above all sensations, she could feel the pure feeling of joy coursing through every part of her as she ran. Even finding her heart skipping in excitement when she felt a tiny nip at her ankle, causing her to look back and see the beautiful wolf behind her in chase. Which simply added to the thrill that ran up her spine as she pushed on to run fast before finding herself being pounced upon.

Tumbling to the ground and feeling fur against fur as she was pinned by the weight of the wolf on top of her now.

The moment she felt herself pounced upon within her sleep, Surry couldn’t help in physically reacting in a jolt and quick intake of air as her eyes shoot open. But with finding it light out with the early morning sun shining brightly through the trees, it had her quickly blinking in finding it brighter than expected before closing her eyes again. Even causing her to groan as she felt her body starting to actually wake up as well, screaming at her as if it had not been ready to greet the day. And as she slightly shifted to try and block the light from her face, finding the warm firmness of muscles to nuzzle her face against, Surry even found her muscles a bit sore… as if she had been running. A thought that had her think about her dream as she breathed in Jax’s scent and nuzzled her face against him some more.

Though with thinking about her dream and how she felt the dampness of earth and undergrowth around them instead of sheets, as well as the sound of birds and a stream really close by, it had her slowly open her eyes again to give a side glance and see the trees standing over them.

Suddenly remembering the full moon and changing into a wolf, but not being able to actually recall what happened after all the pain stopped, Surreal pulled her face back from the warmth of Jax’s skin to look down at herself. Seeing that she was indeed back in her human skin and a little dirty while laying there naked on the forest floor. A realization that even had her cuddle herself back up to the naked frame of her boyfriend laying next to her; trying to keep herself warm in the morning chill as well as cover herself up. Even though she was sure there was nobody else around them despite not even knowing where they were exactly when it came to their location in the forest.

Jax chased Surry. Nipping at her. Not holding any of the wolf back. Not like he had. She was a wolf now and he didn't need to be careful. She was running and he was chasing. It was right in a way that no longer scared him. He chased her but pulled back at times. Enjoying the chase as much as what would come when he caught her. Pinning her down and growling. Claiming her as only the wolf could do.

Jax was sore. He had been sore like this before, when he was younger and new to the whole shifting business. But he hadn't been sore like this in a very long time. Delaying the shift had been worth the pain today. Helping Surry and Travis through the change, well, mostly Surry.

But it wasn't terrible. Nothing he couldn't work through. He was sleeping lightly. Feeling the warmth of the sun on his skin as the body next to him nuzzled against him. Not really ready to be awake yet, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer.

He wasn't concerned or barely caring about the forest floor under them. This was common for him after all. Waking up after a moon in the forest. He felt her stir again, clearly waking up more and with a groan he opened his eyes. Looking down at her.

"Morning. You doing okay?" He whispered. Not ready to move just yet from where they were laying. His heat radiating off of him, barely noticing the coolness. But he could feel some goosebumps on her skin.

He reached blindly behind him. His hands grabbing onto the bag he had carted all night. Reaching into it he pulled out a small fleece blanket and wrapped it around them. He wasn't quite ready to be fully awake, and he wanted to talk to Surry before they rejoined Andy and Travis.

The weight of his arms around her as he pulled her tighter had Surreal smiling even more as she nuzzled against him; pressing her lips against his skin while breathing in his scent. She wasn’t sure if he would wake up soon, and part of her didn’t want to wake him before he was ready. So she tried not to move too much when she had looked down at herself before once more snuggling up against him again. But when he groaned and moved a bit himself, she could feel that he was coming to which had her slowly open her eyes. Looking up and smiling more as she heard him whispering, asking how she was doing before moving just a bit more as if reaching behind him for something. Not realizing that there was a bag behind him that he was reaching for.

“Mmmm good morning,” she answered before feeling a fleece behind warped around them, helping in trapping their heat to keep them warm in the cold morning air. Which helped her ignore that they were on the ground, finding it practically feeling completely natural to be there in his arms no matter where they were. How to answer his question though on if she was doing okay, well that Surry wasn’t sure of how to even answer as she thought about it. Because with trying to remember exactly how the night went, trying to recall what happened after all that awkwardness before the pain, it wasn’t there… only a haze and the flashes of the forest at night going back her quickly. Like in her dream of her running on all fours. So in knowing how she felt for sure, she slowly opened her eyes more and looked up at Jax; resting her chin on his chest as she did.

“I think so…” Surry answered about being okay. Feeling okay even if she was sore and could soak in a hot bath for days.

But feeling that she should be honest, wondering if the holes in her memory was normal, her smile slowly faded a bit as she blinked a few more times to fully adjust to the sunlight of the morning. “I’m feeling sore, which from remembering how it felt changing I’m guessing is normal…” she began before looking up at his eyes in hoping he could at least remember what happened last night. “But I can’t remember anything after that. Just… flashes of forest… and running. Is that… is that normal?” Not liking it that she was missing a piece of her memories but asking to see if she could eventually remember.

Jax had been more dozing than anything else. He was a pretty light sleeper and after everything, the only reason he collapsed was that his body always demanded that of him after shifting. More this morning because he had delayed. He was sore but he would push through.

Advantage to having done this a long time was that Jax knew what would be needed in the morning. Andy had mentioned going back to her jeep but Jax never knew where he'd wake up. So rather than try to preplan, he just took his supplies with him. The only times he dropped the bag were when he was claiming her. Not wanting anything near or between them. So different than with anyone else.

Jax met her eyes, his hazel eyes meeting hers. No sign of the wolf breaking through. Not yet frowning as her smile faded. "Sore is normal. It never really goes away...you just get used to it." He explained as best he could. The fact that he WAS sore this morning was telling.

He wished she could have remembered the fun that they had but he knew she wouldn't. He kissed the top of her head. "Totally normal. Again, as you do this more, you remember more." He'd been a kid when he started. He didn't forget now. He remembered all of it. "What do you want to know?" He asked, keeping her wrapped tightly against him.

Surry could honestly say that the restless feeling was gone as she was laying there in his arms, not feeling as if she had to move… not feeling as if she was filled with such anticipation of what was to come. Which made her feel more relaxed than she had been for a long time, even if she was sore and couldn’t remember what happened while in her new wolf form. Because as she was looking up at Jax and seeing him smile even as she spoke about how she felt sore, he had a way of being able to help push her worries back… helped her with wanting to face those worries and get through them to become stronger. So when he said it was normal and that she would get used to it, Surry gave a nod in finding that reassuring since he had been doing this for decades and this was her first time. Which made her hope even more that he could reassure her about the not being able to remember what happened.

And as soon as he said it was very normal, and that she would eventually start to remember as time went on, it gave her a sense of relief and made her smile return as he kissed the top of her head. Though, it did give her a sense of tiny regret that she couldn’t remember last night. Still wondering if that would come to her or if lost.

So when Jax asked her what it was she wanted to know, assuming that he meant about last night, she nuzzled her cheek against his chest and knew exactly what she wanted to know. “What happened after I changed? What did we all do?” she asked, hoping that what he told her could help spark some kind of memory to come forward more. Wondering if her dream was more than that and if he could fill the blanks that were there. Suddenly worrying a bit that she might have done something… wolfy like hunting a rabbit or deer or something. “We didn’t go… hunting did we?” she asked with a quick look up at him. She wasn't sure if she was ready for that aspect quite yet. Because while she knew that wolves were predators, and many of those stories or movies about wolves had newly turned ones feral and killing what crossed its path, she was really hoping that wasn't the case and that it was exaggerated for scare factor.

Especially the hurting anybody in her path... making her worry just a bit more.

Yet if it was something that had happened, she really did not want to remember something like that and would be thrilled that she did not. And with not having seen any blood on her when she was looking at herself a moment ago, Surry was mostly asking just to make sure and ease any thought that it could have happened.

On some level, Jax was always a bit restless. This was the closest he ever was to fully calm, the day after the full moon. Today though he felt different. Calmer than normal even. It was odd, for sure and he wondered if it was because of Surreal. Because now his wolf was calmer than he could ever remember it being. Almost as though the wolf was content and soothed.

There was a bit of regret on his end as well that she couldn't remember the night before. Because it had been the best night he could remember having. But eventually she would remember and hopefully each moon would just get better and better from here on out.

He grinned when she asked what they did. Knowing as well that this was just a start of a much longer, more detailed conversation. "We chased each other. Mostly I chased you." That wasn't completely uncommon even for those who weren't what they were. After all, he had chased Zak and Sam many times before. It was what happened when they got caught that was the difference. It wasn't a playful chase, but one with a goal and purpose. "And then we..." It was odd now. He had no problems talking about sex, about fucking about any of it, but those words didn't feel right in his mouth now. That what they did was more than that.

"We didn't hunt." He responded more directly to her question. Wondering why she was so worried about it, not even thinking that it was because this wasn't her natural state. Not like it was for him. She wasn't a hunter.

Instead, he tilted her head up and kissed her deeply and softly. "We mated." The words finally coming out as he stroked her face. It took a breath and the odd look that Surry gave him before he went on. "Wolves mate. For life. I've been avoiding those words." He told her softly. "Because it's scary for me."

As Jax answered her question on what they did, speaking about how they had chased each other but mostly her being the one chased, it made her think back to the images of her dream. Thinking about the feeling of running and excitement that had even came with the images that had her wake in a bit of a jolt. Which made her start to believe it wasn’t just a figment of her imagination and that it was a piece of her memory of last night. A piece of the wolf’s memory that had the hairs on the back of her neck stand up on end in response to thinking about it and how the last thing she could recall from the dream was being pounced on by another wolf… Jax’s wolf form. So when he began to say something else about what they did, only to pause for a moment as if trying to find the right words, it made her hope even more that they didn’t go hunting while chasing each other around the forest.

Which was a relief that physically showed through Surry with her shoulders relaxing as soon as he said they did not go hunting while in wolf form. Not having realized that they had tensed just a bit in the worry that she hurt something while out of control of herself.

Of course, what he said after giving her a loving kiss and causing that flutter within her chest was not what she expected either. “Mated?” she repeated the word with a slightly questioning raise of her brow as if asking if she understood him correctly… knowing what mated meant in that they had sex in wolf form. But with the way he said it while gently touching her face, Surry could tell he meant something different. And when he said that wolves mated for life, she realized he was indeed talking about more than just having sex while in fur… sounding as if he was saying they got married. Making her heart skip a bit as she softly asked, “Why is it scary? Does it… does it mean we’re… married in wolf terms?”

As soon as the question left her lips, Surreal felt her heart thumping a little harder in being both excited yet worried about what his answer would be. Because with how it was stated, thinking about him saying for life, it made her both thrilled yet scared as well. Thrilled because she knew and felt as if she didn’t want anybody else BUT Jax like this in her life and how being with him made her happy… yet she was scared because of never having felt this strongly for a person before and what it meant in the new life and world she was learning to live in.

Jax didn't feel Surry tense. He did feel her relax though. He knew she was probably worried about killing something. Sooner or later, she would kill something. It was the nature of the hunt and of being a wolf. So he already knew what to work on this month.

He knew she wouldn't fully understand what mating meant. He closed his eyes for a moment, with a heavy sigh. "Not like being married. Married is legal and can be undone. This is different." He shrugged. "Some get married, some don't. But the bond, you can't just walk away from it." At least that was how he understood it. From his parents, from Zak. From watching other mated couples and knowing that he would never get that. A feeling that became more certain as he got older. He thought maybe he had it once before, with Lisa, but then...then things went so wrong.

He figured on the off chance he was mated, his mate would wind up leaving. They would be mated and never in the same place. It would be a hard way for the very physical wolf to live. Yet he had still resigned himself to it.

Surry though, they seemed right for each other. Maybe he was wrong about how mates worked in the first place. Maybe they were all like this. Fitting in pieces together.

"It's scary because I wasn't expecting any of it. Because...." He bit his lip. "It requires being some amount of vulnerable I guess. And I haven't been that way in a very long time." He had kind of closed that part of himself off after Lisa. "You don't...you don't have to. If you want to leave..." There was a note of sadness in his voice, even suggesting such a thing, but she had the right to run. To not be part of his life. "I mean, if you want, I can go. You shouldn't have to."

“Not like being married. Married is legal and can be undone…” Jax had said in trying to explain what it meant to be mated. She in a way understood what he meant by how marriage could be undone, after all not everybody got married because of love… and in this day and age divorces were more commonplace than they had been once before. So as he spoke about it being something you can’t just walk away from, Surry felt like she was understanding what he was meaning. Mated sounded like what was always known as soul mates in those romance stories she read. “So… like soul mates,” she softly said in a whisper as if unsure of her words. Yet, the more she thought about what that meant if that was the case, it was making her chest swell with emotions. Such as hope, longing, joy, fear, and her own self doubt.

Because with how he had said it scared him to be mated, listening to him talk about how he hadn’t been expecting any of this and how he hadn’t felt vulnerable in that way for such a long time, Surry was worried what it meant for him. Worried that he would run away from everything happening so fast like it has been. Which had been a reason she had been afraid of telling him how she really felt about him. After all, while she knew Jax was aware of how much she was happy around him and how he was helping her through the change in her life, Surreal had refrained from saying what she knew was there… what her brother had even seen in them. Making her think about what Travis had said just the other day when they talked, remembering how he had said he could see how Jax felt about her but how he just was never good with expressing such things. A fact becoming very evident with watching the expressions crossing his face as he spoke… watching his eyes look sad yet lovingly at her.

Though as soon as he began to say that if it wasn’t what she wanted she could leave, or that he would so she didn’t have to, the worry she felt was suddenly changed from what it all meant to being afraid he would leave because of being scared.

“No,” Surry quickly said with a shake of her head, her own voice reflecting her fear of him leaving and her eyes shining with the sadness she would feel if he did. Even doing her best to reach up and cup Jax’s face while being held against him within the fleece blanket. “You can’t leave… you said you would stay as long as I wanted you.” Softly repeating his words he had said to her the day after their life was turned upside down. Taking a deep breath and feeling her heart now thundering within her chest with nervousness as she continued. “I… I love you… and I’m not going anywhere… and I don’t want you to leave either. Please don't… you promised…” Her words having turned into a whisper as she kept her eyes upon his.

And as she laid there within Jax’s arms, having said what she knew she had been feeling towards him since the day they had met in the woods, Surreal felt scared herself with how he would respond to her confession of being in love with him. After all, with how he stated he was afraid of being that level of vulnerable, she was worried she just cemented that fear in him and that he would indeed run.

Jax was struggling with his words. Less his emotions. Those had been clear for weeks. Admitting it was a different matter though. That was where his words started to fail him. Surry picked up some of it, and he nodded when she said soulmates. "Yeah sure." It sounded very fluffy to him, but whatever made her comfortable.

The fact that Jax was still here, holding her after a moon, that he wasn't running and didn't really run from her in the past month, showed how strongly he cared. How much he wanted to be here for them. But he had to give her the option. They didn't know each other very well. Not really. He was brutal, a warrior and hunter and fighter. She was sweet and soft, with a large heart. She felt in ways that Jax wasn't sure he knew how to. His emotions were always either at crazy extremes or barely there. He didn't have a lot of middle ground.

Despite that, part of him was really glad that she said no. Letting out the breath he didn't realize he was holding. Smiling as she cupped his face. "I did promise, but I had to give you the option." He started, keeping his eyes on hers as well. His heart had sped up a bit when she admitted her feelings towards him. But...but he had one more thing he had to get out before he could say it back.

His hand moved slowly over her scars, though his eyes didn't leave her's. Regret and love intermixed. "I caused these." He whispered. "Not on purpose, but I was the reason the hunter was there." He hadn't even blinked about the idea of someone else being hurt then. The point was to kill the hunter and while he was trying to limit collateral damage, he had been too close to really care that much. Just trying to stop the man from killing more.

The word soul mate was indeed something that she thought was only in romance novels and movies, never actually believing in the idea being real or even possible. After all, when one thought about it mathematically the idea of having a soul mate would be a rare thing and technically impossible. Because that meant that out of billions of people there was that one that was your other half, the one out of everybody else in the world that was meant to be with you. And if that was the case then it was most likely that somebody would go their whole life without actually finding their soul mate because of how many people were even alive. That one would only find somebody that was compatible to be with and love, if they’re lucky.

But now, with being a part of the supernatural world and learning what it meant to be a wolf, Surry was starting to wonder if such a thing really was possible… especially with Jax having said that being mated was an undeniable bond between wolves. Making her think about just how strong she felt for him and drawn to be with him. Not wanting to lose him and feeling fear at the thought of such a thing when he had spoke about leaving to not force anything on her.

So as Jax smiled at her saying she wanted him to stay and how he had promised her, it lifted the fear about him running and made her smile back.

Though, while she didn’t want him to feel like he had to say the words back to her after she told him how she loved him, Surreal did feel a little exposed in that moment. Which made her heart race a bit in wondering what he was thinking when she noticed the way his eyes peered into her own as his hand moved over her scars close to her heart. What he said though made her suddenly confused and blink a few times, wondering why he would say he was the reason she had the scars. And as she was giving a shake of her head in about to say it was that man now him, Surry became even more confused when he said it was a hunter. “What?” she couldn’t stop from softly asking as her heart picked up a touch in speed. “What do you mean?”

Mates were truly a wolf concept. He had talked to a handful of shifters who didn't seem to have the same idea. Witches didn't either. If that meant that Surreal needed to think about it as Soulmates then so they were. The odds seemed better among wolves but again Jax didn't know for sure.

He wasn't surprised at her reaction though. He hadn't been very clear. He took a long breath. "After hunters came and killed Sam, I left." That wasn't new information. That was when things fractured with Travis. Because he had left without saying good bye. What was he supposed to say anyway? Sorry, my brother was killed and I have to go track down the people who did it. He didn't know a better way to put it. So he had just left.

"I left to go kill them. Just a group of us hunters. I...I don't know that I should have left." He admitted, something he hadn't said out loud but seeing the way Zak reacted when he came back, and the talks with his brother, he felt some regret over it, more so because of Surry. Because of what he was telling her.

"I tracked one of them to New York. The reason he was running was because of me. I found him, we were really close to him and he..." His thumb ran along one of the scars. "We caught up with him maybe an hour or two later." He didn't need to explain what happened then.

It would be easy to blame himself completely, but the man didn't have to stab Surreal. Ironically if that hadn't happened, who knew if they would ever have met.

Surry gave a small nod as he took a breath and started to try and answer the question that slipped from her mouth about being confused on what he meant by her attack being his fault. She remembered how both Travis and Jax spoke about that time that he had up and left his best friend behind to deal with what happened to his once alpha Sam. But wondering what that had to do with it, she didn’t say anything and just laid there in silence within his arms; waiting and listening to him continue on in stating that he had left to hunt down the ones that harmed his pack and family. Talking about how he hadn’t gone alone and how he was now thinking he shouldn’t have gone at all. Sounding as if he partially regretted his actions then as he spoke. And while she wanted to comfort him and say he shouldn’t regret what he had done, she remained silent… her eyes locked onto his.

Of course, with her heart already racing a bit because of remembering that night in New York and how she had been terrified, it continued to pound within her chest as Jax finally said that man had been one of the hunters he had been after. Explaining how it was him that man had been talking about when saying monsters were after him, remembering how much like a wounded animal he had been in trying to get away even when he stabbed her. But with his words, it had Surry close her eyes for a moment in trying to not think about it… yet still not able to keep it from replaying in her mind as she felt Jax’s thumb caress over one of the scars.

Because one thing that made her so afraid of that night was the fact that the police hadn’t even been able to find the man… and with knowing now that he had been a hunter it brought up those fears she had nightmares about involving that man suddenly appearing and trying to finish the job.

As soon as he said that they had caught up to that man though and finished what they had started, Surry opened her eyes again and looked at Jax as if he answered a prayer. Threatening tears of fear being turned into that of relief shining in her eyes as she blinked a few times to keep from letting those tears out. “That’s why…” she even began to whisper in thinking back on how he had “been at large” still according to the NYPD. “So he’s… dead?” Asking as if her own mind and heart had to hear those exact words. And just as Jax answered that, her eyes were closing again and she pressed herself closer to him. Burying her face within the crook of his neck even as a sigh and small tremble of relief shook through her.

Jax knew telling Surry meant that at some point it would get back to Travis. That he'd have to go another round with his best friend at some point. Because unlike with Surry, where he could say that if the attack hadn't happened, they wouldn't have met, he couldn't say that about Travis and Andy. Travis had already been here, and they met without him. So he couldn't have even used that as a reason why it might be a good thing.

Not that it was. He hated that his actions lead to Surry getting hurt. Granted it worked out in the end, but it still bothered him deeply in his core.

The whole conversation was bringing up odd feelings. After all, Jax wasn't one who regretted actions he took. Even less if they were for the betterment of the pack. So even admitting that he shouldn't have left, that he should have been here for Zak and Jack was hard and unusual.

As for the man, there was a good reason that the police couldn't find him and never would. Jax was good at this stuff and he had learned early that if he didn't want to even risk arrest he needed to take care of the bodies.

He almost misread the tears in her eyes. Thinking that she was worried and scared of him. He nodded when she asked if he was dead. "Long dead and gone." He confirmed. Holding his breath for her reaction. Breathing it out as she buried her face in his neck. He held her and stroked her back.

"Are you okay?" He asked after a moment. He didn't think he had ruined things but then he was never really known for reading a situation right.

To say that Surry wasn’t feeling some measure of fear as they were talking would have been a lie; because every time the topic of that night she was attack was brought up it brought out that anxiety she felt about it. But yet, there wasn’t one ounce of fear that she was feeling towards Jax himself. In fact, there was something deep within that knew he would never harm her. And when he answered that the one that had hurt his pack, the one that had hurt her, was dead it made that sense of trust and being safe with him grow. Especially with how she used his scent and touch to help chase away the fear and anxiety that had been brought out with the topic. Feeling a new sense of comfort and as if some weight she had been denying lifted off her.

So when Jax asked if she was okay after they laid there for a silent moment, sounding as if he was worried a bit about how she was staying silent, she gave a small nod. Slowly taking a deep breath in to help steady her heart and keep from letting tears out as she pulled her face back enough to look up at him.

“I’ve… I’ve had nightmares about that night… about how I barely survived,” Surry began to softly say, feeling the tightness in her throat but not out of fear anymore. “But most of all… I had nightmares about that man… fearing that it would happen again because they had never found him. Now… I… I feel relieved… as if I don’t have to fear an unknown possibility.” Blinking some more in still feeling that burn of tears wanting to come out. As if her own body wanted to shed the past and fears through her tears as she continued. “I… I don’t blame you, and I won’t…”

And with a single tear escaping the corner of her eye no matter how hard she tried to keep it in, Surry kissed Jax and closed her eyes as the warmth of his lips and scent helped lift more tension off her shoulders. Even reaching her hands up to cup his face as she kissed him. Hoping he understood what she meant when she said she wouldn’t blame him for what happened. Because even if it was a string of events that he had been involved in that lead to that night, it wasn’t him who attacked her and that hunter could have just fled without actually killing or harming anybody.
